I heard a comic the other day who said when she was flying Delta in coach, the flight attendant walked through the aisle asking if anyone wanted to read The Wall Street Journal. She remarked: If I was the kind of person that read that paper, I’d be upfront instead of back here!”
I consider myself to be educated and savvy but I gotta tell you, I want to know why those Aliens on the cover of World News Weekly were meeting with Biden at the White House, dictating defense strategy for Ukraine? Everyone knows that because they are from outer space, they are suspect in their suggestions.
My wife and I subscribe to different new outlets; mine I pay for, hers come from retail department stores.
Being an information junkie, I get print and digital editions of Time, WSJ, WaPo, Cooking Light, HGTV, Wine Spectator, Vanity Fair, and Travel & Leisure, just to name a few.
Hope gets mail from Ruelala, Nieman’s, Ruelala, White House/Black Market, Ruelala, Boston University, Ruelala, Brooklyn Law School, Ruelala and Lululemon. oh..and Ruelala.
Yet I am impressed when she yells at me on Tuesdays for throwing out the Science section of the New York Times. It amazes me what piques her interest. I read the food section about dishes to lower your cholesterol and she reads about doctors developing new arthroscopic surgery to enhance your running and life-saving methods for reducing the rate of heart attacks among men and women. She is a news junkie at heart and smarter than me. Pretty Braniac-like, if you ask me.
Every Sunday, I toss out the sports section and read Arts & Leisure, lamenting that we need better theater and rock and roll here in Arizona. She reads Sunday Styles to see who got married and if the shoes she bought last week at DSW will be laughed at on our trips back East or considered quite trendy here in Scottsdale.
When it comes to TV, we have each staked our claim. I am a Citadel, Justified, Barry, Mrs. Maisel, Rabbit Hole and Saturday Night Live kind of guy. As a lawyer and fan of violent series, it’s old Law and Order, Law and Order SVU, Without a Trace, Without a Law and Order, Broadchurch, Mare of Easttown, Love and Death, Fauda. Oh..and anything on Lifetime.
She doesn’t watch comedy. I didn’t know that when we got married. She claims I did. I knew she hated The Three Stooges but you accept people for what they are. and not. But when I watch TV, she goes online and when she’s watching romantic drivel, I do work outside.
We are a household with 4 college degrees between us (ok..she has 3 out of the four) but you would think we’d at least agree on something literary.
She reads anything by Naomi Regan and over 35 books about North Korea and Orthodox society. I like history.
The good thing is we never fight over downloads books and on Kindle, we are on opposite sides of the ‘store.’ I’m hoping though that there must be a meeting of the minds, sharing if not a book, or a television program, at least a movie. No such luck.i went to see Indiana Jones newest film alone. And she told me I could go to the new ‘Mission Impossible’ by myself.
I’m thinking Mad Libs may be the common ground. I can put in sophomoric nouns for parts of the body and she can insert a hilarious “writ of habeas corpus” as we’ll chuckle ourselves into a tizzy.
Alas though, she’ll doesn’t always read my Substack columns when they post. Must be because Ruelala is not an advertiser..yet..
right in the middle!
The HOPE lottery!))
