Here in Phoenix, as I am sure in every town in the United States, local stores like Mor Furniture for Less advertise a Martin Luther King Recliner Sale. What better way to recognize the birthday of a slain civil rights leader than to fashion your home with a new sofa or dining room table?
I never met the Reverend, but I would guess that a new loveseat is precisely what he would have wanted people to remember him by and cement the progress made in the country.
Here is an ad from New York Bagels and Bialys here in Scottsdale and Phoenix.
And there is this….
As long as I can recall, every retail store in America holds sales on the most revered and patriotic days, with no regard for the true meaning of the holiday.
Veteran’s Day, Memorial Day, Armed Forces Day, Juneteenth, and others, have been bastardized by these hawkers of home goods, cars, and groceries, totally ignoring these are days to recall and honor, not shop or at least not disgrace the memory or devalue their roles in history and peace.
I am appalled at American businesses who use every opportunity to sell an item when we should respect those who gave their lives and service to our country and the world. Are there MLK deals? Yes. Although MLK Day is not a major holiday according to an AI search, many major retailers like Amazon, Walmart, Best Buy, and more will roll out deals in the days leading up to MLK Day.
Most go so far as to say it’s a great day to honor people, though I would think that is not how people want to be held in high regard, many posthumously.
Saving some dollars and forgetting history and its meaning is, sadly, the American Way and has been forever.
Shame on those who ignore the past and its impact. Shame on those who denigrate the brave ones. And shame on us for buying into it. Wait till SuperBowl sunday!
Yep! The business of America is business.
Well said! Tomorrow Ken and I will be participating in a vigil in single digit weather in downtown Ann Arbor in honor of MLK Day and the Sanctuary movement. It will be cold outside but we are energized here in MI to protect others.
