What Happens if a Black Woman Plays Anne Frank?
The Forward newspaper explores the issue and controversy
Today, we watched a 2016 movie called: ‘Norman: The Moderate Rise and Tragic Fall of a New York Fixer,’ produced and directed by Israeli production companies. In it, Richard Gere, a descendant of Mayflower arrivals and a Methodist, plays Norman Oppenheim; Steve Buscemi, with Italian, Irish, and Dutch lineage and a Catholic, plays Rabbi Blumenthal, and Welsh actor Michael Sheen plays Philip Cohen, not a Jew among them. But, does it matter? On April 26th, I wrote a column on this very subject.
This week’s Forward, founded 125 years ago takes the question a bit further, as indicated in the title of this post.
I repost this without permission. What are they going to do..sue me? I have a Jewish lawyer-judge-wife, two Jewish-lawyer-judge sisters-in-law, a Jewish-lawyer niece, a Jewish-lawyer nephew and a Jewish-lawyer brother. And this is written by a Jewish-pr guy-me. Don’t bring a knish to a gun fight!!
