My columns to date have been about life as a boomer, sometimes curmudgeonly, sometimes humorously, sometimes retrospectively, but hardly sadly.
Today marks 6 years since I was asked to keynote at The Compassionate Friends annual conference, a yearly gathering of those who have lost children, grandchildren, siblings, nephews, and nieces and steps. Surprisingly, it is also a very uplifting event. and we all share something in common…we lost a child.
My invited table guests were people who know loss all too well, as their tragedy was in the news. I was joined by Ron Goldman’s father and stepmom, Fred and Patti Goldman, and by Robert and Susan Levy, the parents of Chandra Levy. Sadly, their deaths happened in 1994 and 2001 and some have forgotten. I have not and neither have they.
I am sharing my keynote speech from that event, and though it is 15 minutes long, I hope you will watch. i am proud of my words of comfort, healing and pain.
